US President George W Bush says he will veto any law blocking a deal giving an Arab company control of six US ports.
The threat came as Bill Frist, leader of the Republican Party in the Senate, said he would move a blocking law if the government did not delay the deal.
The deal would put six of the largest ports in the hands of Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates.
Some lawmakers say the US will be more vulnerable to terrorism but officials say safeguards are in place.
The ports are currently run by British ports and shipping firm P&O, which has agreed a $6.8bn (£3.9bn) takeover by DP World.
The other ports are Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans and Miami.
President Bush called on opponents to explain why they opposed a Middle Eastern firm taking over when they did not oppose a British company being in control.
"I am trying to conduct foreign policy now by saying to the people of the world, 'We'll treat you fairly'," he said.

Senator Frist, the majority leader in the Senate, said the deal "should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter".

If it did not call a delay, he said he would introduce legislation to ensure the postponement.
Sen Frist is the most senior Republican and the most senior figure in the Senate to oppose the deal.
However, the deal has alarmed both Republicans and Democrats.
Critics fear an increased risk of terrorist attacks, pointing out that the UAE was the home of two of the hijackers involved in the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Democratic Sen Charles Schumer of New York said: "This company is coming out of a country that has had a strong al-Qaeda presence.
"In this post 9/11 world, we cannot consider approving this contract until a much more thorough investigation takes place on this security matter."
The administration has rejected the concerns, saying the deal was thoroughly vetted.
Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said: "Nothing changes with respect to security under the contract. The Coast Guard is in charge of security, not the corporation.
"We all deal with the UAE on a regular basis. It's a country that's been involved in the global war on terror."
P&O and DP World say they are confident the deal will go ahead, the latter insisting that security was "at the forefront" of its business.

Within a couple of weeks of her disappearance on Aruba I began to wonder about the individuals that were currently be held on suspicion on the Island.I am not a psychologist nor am I a psychiatrist and I must add for clarity that what I say and do is my opinion and my views and are not reflective of anything but my own thoughts. Some of what I write about is public knowledge and some is speculation on my part. I do not pretend to have the answer as to what happened to Natalee and I have never met the suspects or anyone connected with the case.I looked at the main suspect Joran van der Sloot, and I listened to him speak and eventually I came to the conclusion that something was amiss. I began to believe in my own mind that Joran was not the boy being portrayed by his mother and father in interviews. Aside from the cockiness and the apparent lack of feelings that he has displayed regarding a girl who hasn't been since he last admitted to dropping her off on a sandy beach on Aruba, there was something more. I looked into his eyes and there was no "there...there". He seemed to me like an empty vessel comprised of bravado and arrogance and even more, he seemed to have absolutely NO compassion or empathy for this girl. Even if she was a stranger to him who he had only known for a few short hours there should have been some compassion for her plight and for her family. I observed none from this young man.I began to think of a word that I have often used in researching individuals who are suspected or known to have committed crimes against their fellow human beings. I thought of Scott Peterson and Ted Bundy and Angelo Buono of the Hillside Strangler case. I thought of Dennis Rader, the BTK killer and I began to see some similarities to this boy with no apparent compassion or empathy in his voice or words or eyes. Was he one of THEM? Was he a sociopath who is incapable of feeling anything for any other human being other than himself? Was he devoid of remorse?I can't be one hundred percent sure because as I stated above I have no reports from professionals to back up my own feelings of unease whenever I see or hear this boy speak. Natalee Holloway is still missing and the people who claim to be looking for her have often caused me to doubt the sincerity of their efforts. I won't go into all of the reasons for that because most of the readers here have already formed their opinions and observed what is going on in Aruba.They have heard the Deputy Chief of Police speak and the hired American Spokesperson, Steve Cohen. They have heard the shrill words of Arlene Ellis Shipper and the rest of the pep squad who were hired to defend Aruba against charges of neglect and corruption and failure to do a proper investigation. There is no need for me to reiterate all that is known about this case and to remind the readers of this site that there are many unanswered questions and that with each so-called forward movement there are ten steps back which places us all at the beginning...May, 2005 and the night that Natalee disappeared without a trace. No television show will send it's lead actors to find her and no crime lab will solve the case in an hour and obviously no Aruban official will speak directly to any of us with the information that we here in America have come to expect of our own investigative bodies. Port Deal Opposition Grows

A deal permitting a United Arab Emirates company to take over ports in New York and other cities ran into more opposition Tuesday when Republican leaders called on the Bush administration to put it on hold. In response, President Bush said the deal would go ahead and that he would veto any effort to stop it. He said the seaports arrangement had been extensively examined and was "a legitimate deal that will not jeopardize the security of the country."

Yet opposition to the deal by lawmakers ups the ante in the dispute with the White House over the deal to allow Dubai Ports World, a state-owned firm, to buy the company that runs U.S. seaports. "The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Senate Republican leader Bill Frist (R, Tenn.), according to the Associated Press. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review." House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R, Ill.)backed Mr. Frist by asking that the deal be suspended until after a more thorough review. Critics have noted that some of the Sept. 11 hijackers used the United Arab Emirates as a base. They contend the UAE was also an important transfer point for shipments of smuggled nuclear components sent to Iran, North Korea and Libya by a Pakistani scientist. Republican Rep. Peter King and Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer said they would offer emergency legislation next week to block the deal ahead of a planned March 2 takeover. Several other lawmakers have come out against the deal, including Republican Governor George Pataki. Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said Monday that he and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would introduce legislation prohibiting the sale of port operations to foreign governments.

Frist Wants Port Deal Punt On Hold

WASHINGTON, Feb 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Tuesday the Bush administration should put on hold a deal with a state-owned Dubai company to manage major U.S. seaports, saying it needed a "more extensive review."
"If the administration cannot delay the process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review," Frist, a Tennessee Republican, said in a statement.

Bush is Selling Our Ports to UAE

Last week, a deal was struck with Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates to provide security for six major US ports -- New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia. The ports were reportedly not consulted on the issue. The Department of Homeland Security says the deal is done and refuses to reverse their decision even in the face of bi-partisan calls for them to do so.
But we can't give up. We must demand that the Administration reverse its decision to hand over security at six American ports to a company from the United Arab Emirates -- a country with ties to the September 11th hijackers.
Email President Bush today. Urge the Administration to reverse the decision to outsource the security at our ports.
It's absolutely unthinkable that we would be handing over security duties for US ports to any foreign country. This has terrible implications for the Houston area and our large ports all over the country. What happens when a foreign country makes a bid to run security at our ports here in Southeast Texas? If what we're seeing here is any indication, money will be more of a deciding factor than security, and that is just plain wrong.
I believe only American companies should be responsible for security at high risk targets in the US like ports and airports. Handing over the security of this nation's largest ports is irresponsible. Security concerns must take precedent over financial concerns when it comes to the security of this nation.
Please contact the White House today. Demand they reverse the decision to outsource our port security today!

Three Men in Toledo Arrested for Threats

Three men in Toledo were arrested and arraigned in Toledo for plotting threats to kill the President and targeting American troops in Iraq. They were planning a Jihad. It was said an informer turned them in. Bush will want to say it was wiretapping that caught them.

One of the men were a naturalized citizen born in Amman.
